Top 10 Website Mistakes To Avoid

Many websites have mistakes that can dramatically impact on their effectiveness. At best your website has 6 seconds to capture the interest of the viewer.

We’ve complied a list of our top 10 mistakes and how you can avoid them. While some of these mistakes merely result in irritation, others will inhibit or prevent visitors to your site from accessing the material or functions that you have included on your website.

1. “Welcome to our website” or “Click to enter site”

Don’t waste your homepage with a click to enter site or by welcoming the visitor to your website. Instead, give them a solution to their problem. That’s why they are on your website to begin with, so reward them with useful, relevant content.

2. Hard-to-find Contact Information

If your website is used to sell services or products your contact information must be clear and easy to find. For small and medium businesses this is vital as your contact information provides a link to reality, that gives customers confidence that they are dealing with a real business not a scammer.

3. Audio

Audio should be used sparingly on any website and it should never auto play. Sites that use audio well require the user to click a play icon.

4. Search Engine Unfriendly

While having a search engine friendly website won’t guarantee you high rankings on a search engine ( that is a discipline called Search Engine Optimisation) there is no excuse not to do the basics. Basic search engine optimisation includes a site map, concise and relevant content, use of standard mark-up tags, the use of alt tags as well as meta tags such as keywords and a description.

5. Out dated technology

If your website is built on Flash there is a 99% chance that is is hindering your business. Google has difficulty indexing Flash websites, which means you wont appear high on search results. Also, Flash is incompatible with smart phones and tablets.

6. Less is more

Are visitors quickly able to identify your products and services? Can they easily find the information they are looking for? A professionally designed well-structured and organised website with clear and up to date information, including an attractive balance of white space, will win over your visitors and help increase conversions.

7. Pop-up windows

Unless you have a very good reason, avoid pop-up windows. They irritate users and many browsers block them.

8. Slow load time

Web visitors are notoriously impatient and will leave your site if it takes to long to load. A good website will load in no more than a few seconds. Reasons for slow loading pages often include overloading a site with pointless graphics and hosting factors such as using overseas hosting companies.

9. Poor navigation

Navigation through your site should be intuitive. Your navigation should be organised and presented in a manner consistent with accepted web conventions. Stick to standard techniques and standard locations for navigation elements.

10. Relevant information

We all know how irritating it is when we visit a restaurants website and find that they don’t have their menu available to view, or they have it in a format that is difficult to navigate on your mobile phone. Then you get to the restaurant and discover that they haven’t updated the online menu for years.

It is vital your website has relevant information that is kept up to date or you run the risk of alienating your customers.

Web design trends come and go but one thing always in your control is an up to date and functional website. If you don’t know where to start or you feel a little overwhelmed with your website, get in touch with a web developer from Savvy Web Studio.

Why Your Home-made Website Won’t Cut It Any more…..

Research released recently shows that Australians are buying online, and they are buying a lot.

A recent eCommerce Report forecasts that online sales in Australia will grow from $27 billion in 2010 to an expected $37.1 billion in 2013 (

Other interesting findings include:-

  • Retail spending via the Internet grew 26% to hit $12.3 billion in the year ending October 2012 (NAB Retail Sales Index 2012)
  • The Internet is being used for shopping by two thirds of consumers.
  • People believe they get a better deal when they shop online.

If these statistics don’t make you want to re-evaluate your e-commerce effects, or perhaps plan a redesign- they should!

A well designed and well organised website, with a back-end that functions correctly along with a shopping cart that makes buying online as easy as possible can do wonders for your bottom line.

In the past, building a quality e-commerce website was an expensive task. You had to hire a professional to do it. Today businesses can use any number of open-source platforms to build a relatively inexpensive e-commerce site.

Just because you can do it yourself, should you? The answer is simply- NO.

Your website is too critical to your business not to get it right.

The cookie-cutter website that you could get for $1000 or less, are OK for a kid with a blog or a pizza shop wanting to put their menu and phone number online but for most businesses they just look generic and cheap.

The problem with cheap, template websites: They look like every other cheap website, and that cheapens your brand. It makes you look like you don’t take your marketing and message seriously.

A customer website design is always going to cost more, but the results are far better then you can get from a generic template: a site that has been designed with your business goals and target market in mind.

If you want to be in business, then you need to be online.

The Difference between Web Designers and Web Developers

Most people use the terms ‘web designer’ and ‘web developer’ as if they are the same, though if you are looking to have a website created for your business you need to know the difference.

Web Designers– is generally graphic design trained and focuses on how a website will look and how a visitor may interact with it. Good web designers (like we have here at Savvy Web Studio) know how to put together the principals of design onto the web to create a visually stunning site. They also understand usability and how to create a website that visitors are easily able to navigate around.

Web Developers– create the back-end of the website, the programming and interactions of the web pages. The back end is the area of the site that isn’t seen by visitors, but which does the work required in order to present the right information in the correct format to the visitors. A web developer will focus on how the websites works. Good web developers know programming and scripts such as PHP and JavaScipt. We understand how how to create a web form that works and ensures a website runs smooth and effectively.

The web designers are Savvy Web Studio know basic JavaScript and HTML and our developers know the importance of a well designed website. Our web developers ensure your website is effectively coded for accessibility and compatibility across the major web browsers.

A professional web team (like we have here at Savvy Web Studio) can make the website function fast and proficiently with good constancy. It is found to be far more efficient when the design and development is carried out at the same time by the one team. The advantages of having both parties involved together will add to the website’s aesthetic look and flow as well as lowering your costs.

10 Things You Should Know About SEO

  1. What keywords are people using to search for your type of business? Google AdWords offer a free service that helps you find the best keywords based on what people are actually using in Google.
  2. Once you have your list of keywords, use them (naturally) throughout your website.
  3. Your web developer should incorporate your keywords in the meta data (the information behind the scenes that people don’t actually see on the page) and where possible the tags on the graphics.
  4. Your copywriter should incorporate your keywords into the content, especially headlines, links and bold text.
  5. The more relevant, credible sites that link to your site, the better. This tells the search engines that your site itself is credible and relevant for a particular search term.
  6. Beware of “black hat techniques” that can penalise your site and ban you from search engines.
  7. Write for your readers not for the search engine. A good rule of thumb is what’s good for humans is good for spiders. (Spiders crawl the web indexing sites according to keywords).
  8. Update your pages regularly with keyword rich content. Search engines love new information.
  9. Make sure each page is at least 250 words of quality information and not duplicated on other pages.
  10. Consider an SEM (search engine marketing) plan to help boost your ranking even further.

When you advertising in a newspaper or a local directory you will only see a return on your investment while the ad is in print, but with a website it is open to your customers 24/7 and is able to market your business until the end of time.

When you get a website it allows anyone in the world to find your business. it you sell a product that can be sold online you can dramatically increase you customer base by having an online store.

With 93% of business purchasing decisions starting with a search engine, this means that if you do not have a website you can only sell to 7% of the market! To be able to gain new customers you will need to understand where your potential clients go to look for new suppliers and to conduct research. A well though out, professionally designed website also gives a professional appearance and allows potential clients to be able to find you easily. It conveys a sense of stability. They can also read more about your business, what products opr services you provide and even answer any questions they may have.

Another benefit of a website is the amount of space you have compared to a printed ad for example. on your website you can market all your services or products, announce events or promotions, display product information, show maps, post client testimonials and industry awards- anything you think will help potential clients feel secure in doing business with you.

A website can also be great for word of mouth marketing, it is easy for people to share your web site address in an email or via social media where your business card or brochure is not available.

Keep ahead of the competition- people use the internet to research verything from pre-schools, restaurants to limousine services. if your sompetition has a website and are only a click away, who do you think will get the first opportunity to serve that potential client?
