Top 10 Website Mistakes To Avoid

Many websites have mistakes that can dramatically impact on their effectiveness. At best your website has 6 seconds to capture the interest of the viewer.

We’ve complied a list of our top 10 mistakes and how you can avoid them. While some of these mistakes merely result in irritation, others will inhibit or prevent visitors to your site from accessing the material or functions that you have included on your website.

1. “Welcome to our website” or “Click to enter site”

Don’t waste your homepage with a click to enter site or by welcoming the visitor to your website. Instead, give them a solution to their problem. That’s why they are on your website to begin with, so reward them with useful, relevant content.

2. Hard-to-find Contact Information

If your website is used to sell services or products your contact information must be clear and easy to find. For small and medium businesses this is vital as your contact information provides a link to reality, that gives customers confidence that they are dealing with a real business not a scammer.

3. Audio

Audio should be used sparingly on any website and it should never auto play. Sites that use audio well require the user to click a play icon.

4. Search Engine Unfriendly

While having a search engine friendly website won’t guarantee you high rankings on a search engine ( that is a discipline called Search Engine Optimisation) there is no excuse not to do the basics. Basic search engine optimisation includes a site map, concise and relevant content, use of standard mark-up tags, the use of alt tags as well as meta tags such as keywords and a description.

5. Out dated technology

If your website is built on Flash there is a 99% chance that is is hindering your business. Google has difficulty indexing Flash websites, which means you wont appear high on search results. Also, Flash is incompatible with smart phones and tablets.

6. Less is more

Are visitors quickly able to identify your products and services? Can they easily find the information they are looking for? A professionally designed well-structured and organised website with clear and up to date information, including an attractive balance of white space, will win over your visitors and help increase conversions.

7. Pop-up windows

Unless you have a very good reason, avoid pop-up windows. They irritate users and many browsers block them.

8. Slow load time

Web visitors are notoriously impatient and will leave your site if it takes to long to load. A good website will load in no more than a few seconds. Reasons for slow loading pages often include overloading a site with pointless graphics and hosting factors such as using overseas hosting companies.

9. Poor navigation

Navigation through your site should be intuitive. Your navigation should be organised and presented in a manner consistent with accepted web conventions. Stick to standard techniques and standard locations for navigation elements.

10. Relevant information

We all know how irritating it is when we visit a restaurants website and find that they don’t have their menu available to view, or they have it in a format that is difficult to navigate on your mobile phone. Then you get to the restaurant and discover that they haven’t updated the online menu for years.

It is vital your website has relevant information that is kept up to date or you run the risk of alienating your customers.

Web design trends come and go but one thing always in your control is an up to date and functional website. If you don’t know where to start or you feel a little overwhelmed with your website, get in touch with a web developer from Savvy Web Studio.

Why Your Home-made Website Won’t Cut It Any more…..

Research released recently shows that Australians are buying online, and they are buying a lot.

A recent eCommerce Report forecasts that online sales in Australia will grow from $27 billion in 2010 to an expected $37.1 billion in 2013 (

Other interesting findings include:-

  • Retail spending via the Internet grew 26% to hit $12.3 billion in the year ending October 2012 (NAB Retail Sales Index 2012)
  • The Internet is being used for shopping by two thirds of consumers.
  • People believe they get a better deal when they shop online.

If these statistics don’t make you want to re-evaluate your e-commerce effects, or perhaps plan a redesign- they should!

A well designed and well organised website, with a back-end that functions correctly along with a shopping cart that makes buying online as easy as possible can do wonders for your bottom line.

In the past, building a quality e-commerce website was an expensive task. You had to hire a professional to do it. Today businesses can use any number of open-source platforms to build a relatively inexpensive e-commerce site.

Just because you can do it yourself, should you? The answer is simply- NO.

Your website is too critical to your business not to get it right.

The cookie-cutter website that you could get for $1000 or less, are OK for a kid with a blog or a pizza shop wanting to put their menu and phone number online but for most businesses they just look generic and cheap.

The problem with cheap, template websites: They look like every other cheap website, and that cheapens your brand. It makes you look like you don’t take your marketing and message seriously.

A customer website design is always going to cost more, but the results are far better then you can get from a generic template: a site that has been designed with your business goals and target market in mind.

If you want to be in business, then you need to be online.

Advertising & Promotional Material Design

Food waste is a complex social, economic and environmental problem that is having an increasingly negative impact on our world. As food lovers, we can enjoy the taste of our food and the social side of eating together. We can also buy, cook and save our food better, reducing our environmental impact and saving us time and money.

Love Food Hate Waste aims to raise awareness about the impact of food waste in NSW and reduce how much ‘good’ food we waste. Love Food Hate Waste is managed by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) partnering with corporate, government and not-for-profit organisations committed to reducing food waste in NSW.

Savvy Web Studio created a design to communicate to the masses in the form of a newspaper advertisement. The aim was to use inspiring concepts that have the potential to be implemented solutions.   We created a series of advertisements to be run over a number of days on specific pages to target the correct audience.  With the use of an infographic style design, we designed an advertisement that has eye-catching content and is easy to understand at a glance. Even those who are oblivious of the important facts will have that interest to look at the advertisement. Its design will fascinate everyone even those who do not have interest in that information. No doubt, it is indeed an effective manner of presenting facts.

Due to its unique way of presenting information and its clear manner of arrangement, it can easily persuade the readers. It is more convincing and influencing. The readers would less likely doubt the data they are seeing.

The use of bright colours, graphs and shapes make it easy for infographics to be remembered by the people.

Why should you get your Annual Report designed by a professional graphic designer?  Simple.  To stand out from the competition and impress.

A professionally designed Annual Report does more than just list numbers and information about your business; it can showcase your business to the best of its ability as well as effectively and compellingly illustrate the strength your company maintains.

The design aspects of a professionally created Annual Report will take your business to the next level, and by investing in your branding message you will create confidence in your business as well as impress those who read it; you’re Trustees, your Shareholders, your Stakeholders, potential investors and your competition.
